IN THE SPOTLIGHT: API+ HERITAGE MONTH

Education

LISTEN. LEARN. ACTION.

WHAT API+ HERITAGE MONTH IS

Celebrating Asian culture.

May is Asian and Pacific Islander (API+) Heritage Month. Originally AAPI – Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month – it’s a time in the US to celebrate the history and culture of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have contributed to the country’s diversity and success. To mark this occasion, we are turning the spotlight on to the API+ community in the US and globally.

WHY THE  API+ COMMUNITY IS IMPORTANT TO DEPOP

Depop is built on communities.

Depop was not created to be a fashion marketplace – it was created to be a community. The Asian Pacific Islander (API) and East and South East Asian (ESEA) communities are a meaningful part of Depop. Now more than ever, we stand in solidarity with them and against the increase in Asian attacks expressing hatred, discrimination and injustice following the COVID-19 pandemic. #StopAsianHate.

WHAT DEPOP IS DOING NOW

Listen. Learn. Action.

We will listen and learn. That means that we will pass the mic to API+ voices who are  demanding and creating change through creativity, culture and fashion. With their guidance, we will co-create an ongoing plan of action to educate, engage and empower our communities.  This will start on our social channels with an “In conversation with” featuring API+ voices who demand and work for change through creativity, culture and fashion. They will explore topics on community, Asian appropriation in  popular culture and fashion, the influence of Asian culture and creativity on mainstream fashion,  #StopAsianHate-initiatives and how to gain confidence in creativity.

WHAT DEPOP WILL CONTINUE TO DO FOR API+ COMMUNITY

Build a path forward.

Depop will continue to engage with the API+ community.  We thrive because the API+ community is part of the patchwork of cultures that contribute to Depop’s success. We’ve already launched several safe space conversations and programs for our internal community – yet we recognise that there’s more work to be done.  Now it's time for us to turn to our external communities to listen, learn and build a path forward, together.

You don’t have to be Asian to raise awareness. Learn more below on how to support.
