Top 10 Depop listing tips

So, how to make a listing on Depop? We’ve broken the process down into 10 easy tips to make your shop’s listings pop. Follow these and you’ll know all there is about how to list something on Depop.

1. Use great images

A good image of your item is essential. It’s your first chance to grab your buyer’s attention as they scroll online. Your shop’s photos are a key opportunity to make your items look as great as possible.

Each listing has space for up to four photos - make sure to use all four, highlighting different parts of the item each time. Showing a variety of details or views of the item can make your listing stronger.

You don’t need to be a pro photographer to take good photos. You can get started with just your phone, some natural lighting and a decent backdrop.

2. Add a video

We’ve found that Depop listings that use video are, on average, around twice as likely to sell within 30 days. So it’s a really good idea to add video to your listing, as well as photos. It’s a great way to show the item from different angles and zoom in on any special details. Plus, it’s a chance to get a little creative and show buyers your brand’s personality, too.

3. Make sure your items look their best

Think about what kind of backdrop or lighting might suit your items. It’s always good to present your items well, on a clean backdrop or plain wall, and make sure your items aren’t creased or rumpled. Remember: this is their chance to shine.

I typically opt for a clean concrete backdrop or even solid-color walls. I prefer that my listings all have a cohesive background and similar lighting. It makes your photos stand out more and look aesthetically pleasing for the shop landing page.

4. Write accurate descriptions

Great descriptions make great listings. But start with a headline that summarises your item. Try to keep it on point - think ‘Light blue maxi dress with short sleeves’ and not ‘My favorite blue maxi from last year’. Then add any relevant item information including the material, measurements and item condition, making sure to include details of any flaws or clear signs of wear.

Why is it important to write relevant info? When a user searches for an item on Depop, we show them the most relevant search results. This means matching their search term with relevant listings that sellers have created, along with any filters that a user may have also applied as part of the searching process.

Depop’s search algorithm then serves up relevant, clear listings from sellers who follow our guidelines and provide a positive customer experience for buyers.

5. Avoid irrelevant keywords or hashtags

It’s tempting to add extra keywords to your listing in the hope it’ll show up for more buyers, but it’s not a good idea. Adding irrelevant or repetitive keywords or hashtags is spam, and it can stop your listing from showing up in search results. So make sure to use only the most relevant keywords for your item listing.

6. Enhance your listings with relevant attributes

Buyers love info. In fact, we’ve seen that over half of buyers have at least two filters applied to their search query. So include as much detail and relevant information in your description - this way your buyer knows everything they need to know about your item before they buy. This means adding categories and subcategories, tags, colors and condition. The listing flow also has options for selecting your item’s brand, source, age and style.

Adding all of this info helps your item show up when buyers are searching for relevant products.  And we’ve found that listings that include the Condition tag have, on average, a 25% higher chance of selling within 30 days and we’ve seen that listings that include the brand name have, on average, a 30% higher chance of selling within 30 days. If your item isn’t branded, there’s an ‘Unbranded’ category for them, too.

Selecting style and color tags are really important when it comes to listing your items online. Buyers will look up certain keywords such as style, brand, color, etc, so it’s important to list those as tags! Once I started utilizing tags, I most definitely saw a difference with how buyers engaged with my items. There are more opportunities for your listing to be seen with tags.

8. Consider the seasons - and the weather

It makes sense that buyers will look for summer items when the weather gets hot, and winter items when it gets colder again. So it’s good to bear this in mind when you’re clearing out your wardrobe and listing on Depop. But that doesn’t mean you can’t sell a nice winter coat in the summertime, though you might want to consider adding a discount to the price of any items you’re selling out of season to make them more appealing to Depop shoppers.

9. Choose the right price

Now you’ve told potential buyers everything there is to know about your item. There’s only one thing left: selecting the right price.

Remember that price is one of the main reasons why buyers choose to shop secondhand (Source: GlobalData 2022 Resale Consumer Survey). Buyers expect, on average, to spend 25% less on secondhand clothing (Source: Zogby Analytics consumer survey, September 2021, n=2,009). Even if your item is new with tags or like new, buyers will likely expect to pay less than if they had purchased the item new directly from a retailer.

Plus, you can receive and make offers using Make Offer - being open to offers can help sweeten the deal for prospective buyers.

10. Ship it out

There’s one more thing you can add to your listing to increase your chances of making a speedy sale: free shipping. We’ve found that listings that offer free shipping have, on average, a 30% higher chance of selling within 30 days. If you’re really keen on clearing out your closet and making sales, add this to your listing.
