Making money on Depop
Step one of how to make money selling on Depop – download our app. It’s free to install and setting up an account won’t cost you anything either. As soon as you’ve registered your details, you’ll be able to create your very own online shop in just a few taps. This is where you can get really creative and show the Depop world your personality. Start by writing a catchy shop description, then upload a striking primary image to match. Doing this will give you the best chance of gaining some followers – particularly as you start uploading your items.
As soon as a product has been listed it’s available for purchase, so you could be making sales in a matter of minutes. You’ll be notified when an item has sold and be able to see all sale details and receipts of payment in the Depop app, and via email. You’ll receive payment through Paypal or Depop Payments depending on which the buyer opted to pay through. We just take 10% of the total transaction value and you'll also pay payment processing fees (see our Terms of Service for more details). Then all that’s left for you to do is send the parcel out to your happy buyer. It really is as simple as it sounds.
What to sell to make money on the platform
If you’re not entirely sure what to sell to make money on Depop, we have the following advice. As long as the item doesn’t appear on our prohibited & restricted items list, you’re good to go. You could have something that another Depop user has always been looking for, so don’t be shy when selecting different styles to list in your shop. From rare vintage finds to contemporary casual basics and everything in between – there could be a buyer out there right now with some cash to spend. The more variety they have to choose from, the more likely you are to make a sale. So choose a wide range of pieces in different sizes, colors and fits. Naturally, anything you have that’s currently trending has a good chance of selling. So keep your finger on the pulse in terms of celebrity styles and hot fashion news. Seasonality plays an important role too – people are less likely to be looking for chunky knits and oversized coats in the warmer months. Similarly, when it’s cold outside, summer dresses and shorts may not be as popular within our community.
-
Picking out high-quality, trending stock
Without even realizing it, you might have something folded away in storage that’s currently back on trend. But how do you know if it’s desirable? A little research goes a long way. Check out what’s popular on social media channels to get a better understanding of the items that could get lots of attention in your shop. The outfits worn by your favorite influencers might prove to be in demand. So keep up to date with what they’re wearing and use this information to inspire your online offering. It’s also worth looking at what other Depop sellers have listed too – this could help you curate a collection that appeals to potential buyers.
-
Taking great photos of what you're selling
You could have some of the most sought-after garments to upload but if the pictures don’t do them justice, they might be in stock for a while. The photos are likely to be the first impression a buyer gets of your item, so it’s essential that they’re of good quality. The most important things you’ll need are a decent camera (most smartphones will be able to do the job), a clean backdrop and a light source. Before you upload your images, double-check that all your content is in focus – any shaky or smudged shots should be removed.
-
Creating well-written and catchy descriptions
You’ve taken the time to get some great photos of your item. Now it’s time to write a short but detailed description. Include information on things like brand, size, fabric type and condition. Anything you think buyers would be interested in knowing about whatever it is you’re selling. If there are any defects to report, this is your chance to describe them in a clear and honest way. Remember to add some relevant hashtags to the bottom of your description too – like #vintagefashion – as it’ll make it easier for users to discover your item.
-
Setting your price
You decide on the selling price of your item and this can be changed at any time. If you’re not sure where to start, consider how much you originally paid for it (but bear in mind it is now a secondhand item which may reduce its value). Consider the condition it’s currently in and choose an amount that reflects its worth accordingly. Add together any costs you’ve incurred when preparing your item for sale too, as well as the amount of money you’d like to make as a profit. Combine these amounts and you should be left with an idea of how much you should list the item for.
-
Standout customer service
This means making an effort to respond to buyer messages quickly, packaging your items securely and posting them out in good time. The more you’re able to provide this level of customer service, the more likely you are to receive great seller reviews. The feedback you receive can be seen by other potential buyers and if it’s positive, it could encourage more – and maybe even repeat – sales.
